Hyatt Regency Kauai

Where a Development Philosophy Was Born

Thomas Becnel’s development philosophy was shaped profoundly during the 16 years he spent living and working on the island of Kauai. Hawaii’s planning environment demanded an approach that honored the land, protected natural views, and celebrated local culture. During this time, Becnel embraced a design philosophy built on harmony with the natural world, architectural restraint, and an unwavering respect for the landscape. These principles became the guiding foundation for his future real estate projects in both Hawaii and Florida.

The pinnacle of his Hawaii work was the creation of the Hyatt Regency Kauai, a landmark resort known for its careful integration of luxury and nature. Inspired by the island’s historic oceanfront estates of the 1920s and 1930s, the resort features open-air architecture, lush tropical gardens, flowing lagoons, waterfall systems, and structures intentionally kept no taller than a coconut palm to preserve Kauai’s iconic skyline. Every element of the resort was designed to enhance the surrounding landscape rather than compete with it, resulting in an immersive, unforgettable environment for guests.

Marketing materials from the period highlight the resort’s comprehensive lifestyle offerings, including championship golf, ANARA spa experiences, horseback riding, sailing, surfing, helicopter tours of Waimea Canyon, and excursions along the Na Pali Coast. Following Hurricane Iniki in 1992, the resort’s reopening was celebrated as the return of one of Kauai’s most beloved destinations, further underscoring its importance to the island’s hospitality landscape.

Personal postcards addressed to Becnel at his Destin home reflect the lasting emotional connection his family maintained with Kauai long after the development years. Hawaii was more than a professional chapter—it was a formative experience that shaped his philosophy and became part of his family’s story. The Hyatt Regency Kauai remains a defining example of Becnel’s ability to create resorts that honor their natural setting while offering exceptional levels of beauty, comfort, and authenticity.
